The study suggested that these students opted out for they perceive themselves as unprepared for the challenges college offers, but what would high school students be, if not fully prepared for college education? The current education system was formed in the 17 th century, aimed to meet the economic interest at the times of industrial revolution. These students ended up feeling lost, helpless and stressed out under a new discovery and creativity oriented education structure. Therefore, it is time to evolve and embrace the non-linear narrative by introducing the idea of a gap year as part of our education system. Perhaps one of the most benefitting elements of a gap year is self-actualization. Gap year offers students a change of pace from the repressive formal education and allows them to gain exposure by trying new things such as volunteering in third world countries, getting an internship in their field of interest and travel around the world.
