Essay on gene mutation

More information
Cancers are a result of uncontrolled mitotic cell division, which is the division of one cell to produce two genetically identical daughter cells. The problem is cased by mutations or abnormal activation of the genes which control cell division. We can say that a gene has been mutated if there is a change in one of the bases; for example, one base turns e. The diseases that are listed in the paper are just but a little taste of the many diseases that can occur in a child or an adult.

Genetic Mutation - Term Paper

Please join StudyMode to read the full document. It arises from a variety of sources which may include: errors in DNA replication, spontaneous lesions, and transposable genetic elements. It may arise in a variety of ways such as exposure to ultraviolet or ionizing radiation or chemical mutagens. This mutation can but do not always cause cancer or other diseases. In gametic mutation , the organism which contains the mutation may not be affected, but it may or will be passed to its offspring, where the mutation might be, or can be expressed.

Genetic Mutation

A mutation is a change in the DNA base sequence that is harmful or sometime beneficial to the organism. In general mutation occurs spontaneously and is considered as a rare but continuous event which takes place at a rate of base pair. The presence of a mutagen increases the frequency of mutation to to base pair.
When a cell fails to replicate properly and DNA that is produced is not identical to that of the original as a result of changes made for various reasons , a mutation has occurred. Failures in replication can be caused by a large number of reasons, but some of the more common examples include incorrect pairing of nitrogen bases and exposure to radiation and certain chemicals. Approximately one hundred different mutations have been found to cause this problem with the NLRP gene [15]. Almost all of the mutations are located on exon 3, which begins before the start codon but goes several hundred base pairs into the coding DNA sequence Figure 2. Most of the mutations that cause this deficiency as caused by a type of mutation referred to as a missense mutation.

I highly recommend completing the Capstone after doing the other four courses - it is like having dessert after a four course meal.
